History

A former Traverse City State Hospital patient recreation area. Boughey Park was later donated to the township in 1993 by the state.  Its namesake derives from the original grantor to the state in the 1940’s, Herbert Boughey.  The Boughey family owned the Carp Lake Lumber Company in Bingham which manufactured lumber, shingles, bark and wood products as well as many other ventures in and around the Leelanau and Traverse City area.  Herbert P. Boughey, son of Carp Lake Lumber Co. founder Herbert F. Boughey, was a patient periodically at the Battle Creek Sanitarium and State Psychiatric Hospital in Ann Arbor.  The township received the 3-acre parcel through state legislation which divided up the property of the closed regional psychiatric hospital.
